I have always derived pleasure from creating something with my hands. I started working with clay in 1991, and soon know that this was what I wanted to do. Throwing on the wheel revealed a desire to create things by this new medium. I love the inherent qualities of clay, and the processes by which it can be formed and fired to a near-permanent state. The act of making something out of virtually nothing is mysterious and enthralling.
I love to create functional pottery that is well-balanced and pleasing to the eye and touch. Sculpted pieces that represent something that would be found in the ocean or just a quirky animal that I can have fun with.
Pit-firing, saggar and raku. These methods I like because of the unreliability of their finished effects. To open a kiln or a pit and discover what has occurred is like opening a present, not knowing if it is something to delight or disappoint.
Whilst there are many consistent qualities to my work, it’s always in the process of slowly becoming something else. I usually have more new ideas than the time to try them, and the feeling of being perpetually on the way to the next discovery is addictive.
I live on the tope of a hill, surrounded by trees and native animals and birds, in the country but able to see the City of Hobart from my windows.
