Very early in my “ceramic life” I fell in love with porcelain – because it is clean and smooth to work with and beautifully silky when polished. Later I ventured into bone china – for its whiteness and interaction with light – frequently adding paper and fiber to exaggerate its properties and strong fragility.
Challenging working conditions in China, including language and the sourcing of materials, inadvertently led to a freer, less controlled artistic outcome. A realisation that achieving my expectations would be unattainable in that environment has enhanced the experimental nature of my work.
My current focus is my emotional response to society’s acknowledgment of the strength and venerability of us all. I aim to create pieces devoted to a contemplation of beauty and peace that make even everyday objects unique and special. I like to combine different medias in my work, hand polished porcelain with the cool elegance of sterling silver. My sculptural pieces often incorporate natural clays with gold leaf applied or the sparkling promise of Swarovski crystals.
Contemplating beauty is a spiritual experience; I aspire to find a way to convey my own reverence for the mystery of spirit and nature. In times where no criteria exist for what is acceptable, I hope for moments of reflection and possibilities that grant a relief for the often-hurt eye and the sometimes-frightened soul.
I believe we must always be a little greater and more advanced than our creations, and, most importantly, must notice the flaws in what we have made but without a driving compulsion to fix them. Awareness of those flaws is not the same as perfectionism; it’s about keeping balance and holding open the door for improvement and humility.
