Jude Maisch

Jude has always been a maker. With a hardware retail childhood, surrounded by decorative tableware, it was perhaps inevitable that Jude’s artistic inclination would eventually lead to her becoming a potter.

Jude’s production is of primarily decorative tableware in which pattern is the primary focus: through the unique application of transfers, drawing on porcelain with under-glaze pencil, impressing with found objects, gold lustre outlining over colourful maiolica or raku fired lustrous surfaces.  There are tiny pinched bowls, slab-built coasters and buttons, wheel thrown mugs, bowls and jugs, and slab-built plates and platters. Jude takes pride in attention to detail and the feel of the work in the hand.

Jude’s inspiration comes primarily from the natural world, with a fascination for patterns in nature.

Her concern with threats to native flora and fauna translates into several strands of her ceramics, in particular her “bleached coral “ porcelain pinched vessels and small pinched “endangered species” legged vessels. The latter is a reminder to notice the beauty in the smallest of our endangered creatures, in particular the insects, with their beetle-like lustrous surfaces.

Jude teaches from her Lindisfarne studio, is a founding member of Off Centre Gallery and a Life Member of the Tasmanian Ceramics Association.
